    Trainings & Workshops Date

    The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) held a pilot training course for the Professional Telephone Interviewers Program: Ten Field-Based CATI Principles.

    The training aimed to develop the skills of university students, strengthen neutrality in data collection, and standardize interviewing procedures, contributing to improved survey data quality.

    This initiative came as part of SESRI’s ongoing efforts to advance data collection tools and methodologies in line with international best practices.

    ​Dr. Elmogiera participated in the Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition 2025 (AgriteQ) as part of a panel discussion on Qatar’s food security strategy.


    His participation highlighted the Agricultural Cost Study Model, a research project conducted in collaboration between SESRI and the Ministry of Municipality. The discussion focused on the importance of agricultural research and data in supporting food security planning and improving decision-making in Qatar’s agricultural sector.

    International Conference: Economic, Social, and Cultural Transformation for Sustainable Development: The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute is organizing an international conference on economic, social, and cultural transformation for sustainable development.


    This conference aims to bring together a distinguished group of experts, international and local researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders in society to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the Sustainable Development Goals. It will do so by promoting knowledge exchange, presenting best practices, and generating actionable insights for implementation in line with economic, social, and cultural policies, amid the major challenges facing our region.

    During the conference, participants will have the opportunity to attend keynote lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions covering a wide range of topics.

    Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Symposium: Strategies for the Low Carbon Transition: SESRI organized the international symposium Climate Change and Sustainable Energy: Strategies for the Low Carbon Transition on November 17, 2024, at Qatar University. The symposium brought together local, regional, and international experts, researchers, students, and policymakers to discuss climate change challenges and explore practical pathways toward sustainable energy and a low carbon future. The event focused on the role of energy efficiency, behavioral insights, renewable energy strategies, and decarbonization efforts in supporting the transition to more sustainable development. Discussions highlighted Qatar’s national priorities, including Qatar National Vision 2030, climate action, sustainable resource use, and evidence based policymaking. Through its interactive sessions, the symposium provided a platform for knowledge exchange and dialogue on policy tools, innovative technologies, public behavior, and regional strategies that can support climate mitigation and adaptation.     Workshop on Understanding Family Cohesion in Qatar: The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute held a workshop titled “Understanding Family Cohesion in Qatar.” The workshop shed light on the dynamics and consequences of family relationships within the Qatari context. It also shared the findings of the Family Cohesion Project, which was implemented in collaboration with the Doha International Family Institute. This project is considered a milestone in the ongoing efforts to understand family connectedness and solidarity in Qatar. The event included an in-depth, data-driven analysis and scientific discussions covering different aspects of the concept of family cohesion, including the social, economic, and cultural dimensions specific to the State of Qatar. The workshop aimed to provide experimental insights and scientific evaluations that contribute to a deeper understanding of the importance of family cohesion in Qatar.

    Dissemination Workshop: Consumption Values and Behavior Survey of Qatar 2024: SESRI held a dissemination workshop to present key findings from the Consumption Values and Behavior Survey of Qatar 2024. The workshop brought together researchers, stakeholders, and representatives from relevant sectors to discuss public attitudes, consumption patterns, and behavioral trends in Qatar.

    The session highlighted important insights from the survey and explored how the findings can support evidence based decision making, policy development, and future research. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in discussion around the implications of the results and their relevance to Qatar’s social and economic landscape.

    Workshop: National Identity in the State of Qatar: The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute is organizing a workshop titled “National Identity in the State of Qatar.”


    The workshop aimed to clarify the components of national identity in the State of Qatar and identify its determinants. The event presented the findings of the National Identity Project.

    The event included an in-depth, data-driven analysis and scientific discussions covering different aspects of the concept of national identity, including the social, economic, and cultural dimensions specific to the State of Qatar.

    Researchers, scholars, and experts presented their research findings. The event provided insights, empirical evidence, and scientific evaluations, while connecting researchers with relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries in both the public and private sectors to discuss their experiences related to this topic.

    Training of Fieldworkers for the Study Estimating the Number of Unowned Pets/Animals — Stray Dogs

    As part of the preparations for the study estimating the number of stray dogs in Qatar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality, the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute organized the first fieldwork training on May 29–30, 2024.

    Dr. Mo Salman, research consultant and professor at the University of Colorado in the United States, participated in the training. The training aimed to introduce participants to the research protocol and occupational health guidelines. Veterinarians and workers nominated to participate in the field research also attended the training.

    The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute held a workshop titled “Qatar Education Study 2022: Towards Agenda 2030” on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Qatar University’s Research Complex. The workshop presented the findings of the Qatar Education Study 2022 and discussed how they aligned with the goals and priorities of Agenda 2030. The event provided an opportunity for participants to examine key insights from the study and engage in discussions around the future of education in Qatar.

    SESRI's First Gathering Under the Theme of "Ethraa" Enrichment: SESRI launched its first gathering under the theme “Ethraa Enrichment” as part of a periodic initiative aimed at fostering the exchange of ideas, research, and constructive discussions among employees. The gathering provided a collaborative space for staff to share knowledge, discuss key topics, and contribute to the development of the institute’s work and the achievement of its shared goals.

    Regional Conference for the Arab Region Global Sustainable Development Report 2023:

     

    Qatar University’s Social and Economic Survey Research Institute initiated a two-day "Regional Conference for the Arab Region and West Asia - Global Sustainable Development Report 2023."

    This conference examines priorities, challenges, and solutions for achieving SDGs in the Arab region.

    It served as a precursor to the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2023.

    The event included participation from national and international leaders and researchers.

    A workshop titled “Sustainability and Quality of Urban Life in Qatar and the Gulf Region: Measurement and Methodologies” was held at Qatar University. The workshop took place at the Auditorium, Research Complex, Qatar University, Doha, QatarThe event focused on sustainability and the quality of urban life in Qatar and the Gulf region, with discussions centered on measurement approaches and research methodologies.

    The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) conducted a workshop on analyzing agricultural data using SPSS, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality.


    The workshop focused on supporting the analysis of agricultural data and strengthening participants’ ability to use SPSS for research and data-related work.

    A FAIR Data Workshop was held at the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) at Qatar University. The workshop took place at the Training Hall, Library Building (B13), SESRI, Qatar UniversityThe workshop provided an overview of open-source strategies and tools related to FAIR data principles. It aimed to share knowledge and practical experience on applications, strategies, and tools that support the creation of data products in line with FAIR principles. The workshop covered the following topics:

    4 - 6 September 2023
    SESRI held a workshop to present the findings of thQatari Youth Project, titled “Gender, Education, and Work: A Survey Study of Youth in the State of Qatar.” The workshop was attended by representatives from government and semi-government entities, with the aim of activating the project’s recommendations related to Qatar’s national youth policies.

    The session also provided an opportunity to review the results of the first phase of the project.

    Dr. Le Trung Kien from SESRI’s Research Department presented a workshop on “Sampling and Weighting”, where he discussed related statistical issues.

    The workshop aimed to keep SESRI staff up to date with recent developments in sampling methods within survey research.


    13 September, 2023
    The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) at Qatar University, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA), conducted a workshop on project design for policy influence in Doha.


    The workshop was attended by more than 40 participants from academia, government entities, and the private sector.

    Participants discussed ways to improve the design of projects and government interventions in order to support and influence policy change.

    A Questionnaire Design and Development workshop was held by SESRI in collaboration with Graduate Learning SupportThe English workshop was presented by Dr. Abdoulaye Diop on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. The session focused on questionnaire design and development, supporting participants in strengthening their understanding of survey research tools and methods.

    SESRI organized an event titled “FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™: One Year On” to highlight the impact and implications of the mega-sports event from a research and analytical perspective.


    The event took place on Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Research Complex (H10), Auditorium, Qatar University.

    The event featured comprehensive, data-driven analyses and academic discussions on different aspects of the World Cup, including its social, economic, and cultural impacts on Qatar and the global football landscape. Researchers, scholars, and experts presented findings from their studies on the impact of the tournament on Qatar, offering evidence-based insights and scientific evaluations of the wider effects of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

    As part of the ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Municipality and the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI), Dr. Moghaira Al-Hawd discussed the results of the Agricultural Costs and Net Returns Study with the Permanent Farms Committee. The meeting was attended bMr. Youssef Al-Khulaifi, Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality, along with a number of farm owners and managers in Qatar. The meeting came as part of the Ministry’s efforts to monitor indicative prices for agricultural products by making use of the study’s findings.

    SESRI hosted the first session of a discussion series on labor market challenges and employment opportunities in Qatar and the Middle East and North Africa region.

    The session, titled “Current Labor Market Challenges in Qatar and the MENA Region,” took place at the Research Complex (H10), Auditorium, Qatar University.

    The event was organized in collaboration with the College of Business and Economics at Qatar University. It brought together senior policymakers, labor market experts, academics, stakeholders, young researchers, and graduate students to discuss key labor market issues and more flexible policy approaches.

    SESRI’s Policy Department held a discussion session on the roadmap for developing a food security application.

    The session was attended by the Waste Management and Recycling Center at the Ministry of Municipality, representatives from charitable organizations in Qatar, the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities, and members of the private sector. The discussion focused on ideas for developing an innovative mobile application that would support a sustainable solution for food insecurity and food waste in Qatar. All participating entities approved the final concept of the application and agreed to begin its development.

    SESRI organized a discussion session titled “Results of the 2022 Agricultural Census: Toward Achieving Sustainable Food Security.”


    The session took place at the College of Engineering Building (H07), Auditorium, Qatar University. The event highlighted the results of the 2022 Agricultural Census and the Agricultural Costs and Productivity Survey in both the livestock and plant production sectors. It also discussed the impact of the census findings on Qatar’s food security strategy. Experts and researchers presented research findings on the key results, supported by posters showcasing the outputs of this important research project.

    Qatar University hosted a discussion session on the development of a mobile application to support sustainable food security.


    The session was organized by SESRI’s Policy Department, represented by the Sustainable Development Office, and brought together stakeholders from several sectors to discuss how the proposed application could connect food suppliers with consumers in a sustainable way. The discussion highlighted the role of technology in addressing social and economic challenges, reducing food waste, supporting food redistribution, and encouraging collaboration between government, private sector, and community organizations.


    Participants also reviewed practical solutions related to managing surplus food, recycling food waste, and strengthening Qatar’s food security efforts through innovation and cross-sector cooperation.

    The research team of the Agricultural Census Project in Qatar 2021 followed up on the census documentary film and the agricultural census data that had been announced at the Qatar International Agricultural and Environmental Exhibition on March 10, 2022The meeting highlighted the progress of the project and reviewed the documented outcomes of the agricultural census, as part of SESRI’s research work at Qatar University.

    The session focused on research design methods, with particular emphasis on randomized controlled trials and their use in scientific and survey-based research.

    SESRI held a virtual research seminar on Key Issues Facing Contemporary Youth and Policy ResponsesThe event addressed several major themes related to youth, including education and work, marriage and family, civic participation, and mental health and youth well-being. It brought together discussions on current challenges affecting young people and explored possible policy responses.

    SESRI organized a virtual research seminar on contemporary youth issues, challenges, and policy responsesThe seminar discussed key findings from a research project focused on Qatari youth, covering themes such as education and skills development, labor market participation, marriage and family, civic engagement, and mental health and well-being.


    The event brought together specialists and researchers who presented insights, answered audience questions, and discussed how evidence-based research could help address youth challenges and support Qatar National Vision 2030.

    SESRI organized a training workshop titled “How to Be Creative in Developing Research Ideas on Substance Use Disorders Among Children and Adolescents.” The workshop was held in partnership with the Family Affairs Department at the Ministry of Social Development and FamilyThe event focused on developing creative research ideas related to substance use disorders among children and adolescents, while encouraging research collaboration to address important social and family-related issues.

    SESRI’s Professor Arokiasamy Perianayagam participated in Qatar University’s ANDD event, where he delivered a workshop titled “Paper Series Perfection and Scientific Writing.”


    The workshop focused on strengthening scientific writing skills, with an emphasis on thinking about policy impact, engaging policy in academic writing, and publishing in high-impact journals.

    A training workshop was held to raise awareness about the risks of addiction and behavioral disorders. The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Social Development and Family in partnership with SESRI at Qatar University. It focused on the field and research application of a brief assessment, intervention, and referral-to-treatment approach for adolescents at risk of addiction and behavioral challenges.


    The session brought together professionals from treatment and rehabilitation teams, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers, as well as specialists working in schools.

    The workshop addressed key methods for identifying risky behaviors, raising awareness about substance abuse, referring cases to specialized treatment centers, and supporting adolescents through family, school, and community-based intervention.​

    ​SESRI held a virtual lecture series titled “Policy Analysis.” The series was presented by Dr. Arokiasamy Perianayagam, Head of the Urban Development Office at SESRI’s Policy Department.


    The series covered topics related to evidence collection, public policy recommendations, policy analysis challenges, and policy monitoring and evaluation.

    ​SESRI participated in an open meeting for faculty and staff as part of the institutional accreditation team visit.


    During the event, SESRI members presented research posters related to their areas of work. The posters covered topics such as teaching and learning in surveys, including anticipating participant errors, and the importance of the Institutional Review Board in survey research, with a focus on SESRI’s research procedures.

The seminar was led by Dr. Khaled Ahmed Abdel Jabar, Consultant at the Family Affairs Department and Assistant Professor at SESRI, Qatar University.

    ​SESRI, in collaboration with Graduate Learning Support, held an English workshop titled “Research Ethics and Compliance (IRB).”


    The workshop was delivered by Dr. Noora Lari, Manager of the Policy Department and Vice-Chair of the QU-IRB Committee.

    The session took place on February 25, 2021, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM via WebEx, and focused on research ethics, compliance, and Institutional Review Board procedures.​

    ​SESRI at Qatar University organized an online presentation to share the preliminary results of the research project “Qatar’s Labor Law Changes and Worker’s Welfare: Attitudes and Perceptions for a Sustainable Future.” The session was delivered by Prof. Abdoulaye Diop, Manager of Research at SESRI, and took place on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. The presentation focused on workers’ welfare, attitudes, and perceptions related to labor law changes in Qatar, highlighting research findings from a project funded by Qatar Foundation under the QNRF/NPRP 11th Cycle.
